COMMUNITY INFORMATION

Washington Township is a leader for achievement in local government, education, and recreation. Washington Township with a population of 48,500 is Gloucester County's largest municipality. The Township is 23.0 square miles. The Township is served by six postal zip codes: Blackwood, (Turnersville) 08012, Glassboro 08028, Grenloch 08032, Pitman 08071, Sicklerville 08081, and Sewell 08080.

Washington Township is conveniently located on the N-S Freeway (State Highway 42) at the beginning of the Atlantic City Expressway. Less than 10 minutes away are: Interstate Routes 295, 95, 676, and the New Jersey Turnpike. Local train service is available from nearby Woodbury or the Lindenwold High Speed Line which is operated by PATCO. New Jersey Transit bus service is located in Washington Township and serves the surrounding areas. The town is approximately 20 minutes from Philadelphia, and the main hub of AMTRACK. Newark International is approximately 90 minutes away, New York 2 hours, Delaware Memorial Bridge 40 minutes, Commodore Barry Bridge 40 minutes. and all shore points approximately 1.5 hours away from our town.

GOVERNMENT

The township is governed by a Mayor and a five member Municipal Council. The Mayor is elected by township voters and is the Chief Executive in charge of the administrative functions of the town. The Township Council is elected at-large by the entire community. The elected officials are to serve a four year term.

ADMINISTRATION

The township has 275 full-time and part-time employees and provides the following departments: Administration and Finance, Municipal Services (Public Works and Parks & Recreation), Construction, Planning & Zoning, Payroll, Police Department, Municipal Court, Youth Services, Clerk, Tax Assessor, Tax Collector, Vital Statistics.

EDUCATION

The Washington Township School District is served by the Board of Education. This board is elected by the township voters. The School District currently has: One PreSchool/Kindergarten Center, Six Elementary Schools (grades 1- 5), Three Middle Schools (grades 6- 8), and one High School Complex.

FIRE DISTRICT

The Township has a fire district served by several volunteer fire companies. There is a paid full-time Fire Chief and 11 full time paid firemen. The town also has an ambulance and rescue association.

MUA (water)

The Municipal Utilities Authority is a non-governmental agency who established the Water and Sanitary Sewer Systems throughout the town. This agency also establishes the rates for its subscribers.

DEMOGRAPHICS

In the 1960's, Washington Township was a community full of farmland and open space. Over recent years the Township has become one of the fastest growing communities in the state. The Township has realized the need to manage residential growth and commercial growth in order to provide a stable and reasonable base.

The Mayor and Council in conjunction with the Open Space Committee have been working towards the commitment of Open Space Planning. This program was created for the preservation and recreational use of forests and wetlands throughout the community. To date Washington Township has purchased six parcels of land in the community for a total of 70.98 acres.

The Township also initiated its own Farmland Preservation Program which has purchased many acres that otherwise would have been developed into more residential areas.

In 2002 Washington Township started to implement speed control devices throughout the community for the safety and protection of our children.

The township has numerous facilities which provide services to the community such as the Performing Arts Center (WTHS), educational facilities, superior recreational facilities, and a beautiful park complete with an open seating amphitheater. The Township has many quality restaurants along with banquet/catering facilities for every particular taste.

The town has one of the finest hospitals in the county. The Kennedy Memorial Hospital of Washington Township has recently expanded their emergency room. They already have an out patient Surgical Center. The latest addition to the Hospital Complex will be the New Oncology Center.

Washington Township is a wonderful place to live, work, and enjoy. As you can see from the description above, Washington Township is one of the best communities in the State of New Jersey.
